2-Day Workshop
Saturday, May 16
Sunday, May 17
10:00am – 4:00pm (both days)Workshop Description
This workshop is designed for tea lovers and ceramics enthusiasts interested in learning how to create handbuilt teapots inspired by the traditional techniques of Yixing teapot making. The workshop will begin with an introduction to the history and significance of Yixing teapots, along with an overview of the methods and processes involved in creating these unique and functional objects. Participants will then explore the various stages of teapot development, including paddling, layering, lid and spout construction, and firing.
Unlike wheel-thrown vessels, Yixing teapots are entirely handbuilt. Traditionally, the clay is first pounded with a heavy wooden mallet into a slab. From there, one of three techniques is used to shape the teapot: pre-molded construction for segmented forms, paddling for round teapots, and slab construction for square teapots.
In this workshop, participants will focus on constructing a round teapot, a form often associated with a softer, more feminine design. Its open interior structure makes it particularly well suited for tightly packed oolong teas, such as Monkey Picked, allowing the leaves to fully unfurl during brewing.
Throughout the workshop, participants will practice each technique while creating their own Yixing-inspired teapot under the guidance and support of Biliana.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of Yixing teapots and the craftsmanship behind them. Each participant will leave with their own handcrafted teapot and a deeper appreciation for the beauty, history, and function of these remarkable objects.

After graduating, she moved to the United States, where she started her studio practice and teaching. With over 20 years of teaching experience, Biliana specialize’s in sculptural, hand-built ceramics, and surface design techniques.
“As an artist, I draw inspiration from the organic world around me. I am fascinated by the curves, silhouettes, and cast shadows of forms and how they transition into one another. My love for the female form is also a significant inspiration for my work. I have always found the female form to be beautiful and captivating, and I explore it through my sculptural pieces. I enjoy working with graphic lines and images, and I find that large bowls and plates offer the best three-dimensional canvas for my love of graphic imagery, texture, and color. Overall, my artwork is a reflection of my deep appreciation for the natural world and my desire to explore and experiment with different forms and techniques in ceramics.”
