Clay As A Tool

Learn how to use clay as a tool in your studio practice by creating custom texture stamps, signature stamps, molds for simple and complex forms, drape, press and hump molds, bas-relief/sprig molds, foot makers, diameter shapers, templates, ribs, edge trimmers, shrink rulers, and more.This hands-on workshop begins with a 90-minute overview of tools and their uses, followed by clay-building sessions using slab construction, solid forming, and carving. You’ll have time to experiment, design, and refine tools tailored to your unique studio needs, with support and demonstrations from Biliana throughout.
By the end of the day, you’ll walk away with a set of custom tools—and the know-how to continue creating them.

Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM (includes a one-hour lunch break from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM)

1563 N Lake Ave, Pasadena, CA 91104The workshop will begin with a demo from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM, followed by material prep and drying time during lunch. You'll then have three hours of hands-on toolmaking time in the afternoon.

Lunch will be provided. Please plan to bring your own lunch if you have any dietary restrictions. We have a communal refrigerator where you can store food and bev during the workshop.Materials Needed:
Please bring your essential hand-building tools: needle and carving tools, ribs, ruler, brushes, a notebook, and a pencil. The Clayhouse will provide workspace, clay, boards, turntables, drying fans, and cantal wire. Additional tools such as cookie cutters, circle cutters, and foam will also be available.We’re looking forward to a great day of making with you!

Discover how to make pendants and earrings from fine silver Precious Metal Clay in this two-day workshop. The experience begins with a two-hour intro to forming and molding techniques, including hand-building, mold-making, hollow core beads, bas relief, and slab construction.You’ll explore design possibilities and craft your own pieces with Biliana’s guidance, learning skills such as texturing, refining, soldering, and patination.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with wearable jewelry and a new appreciation for the creative potential of metal clay.

About Biliana Popova
Biliana Popova is a Los Angeles-based ceramic artist; In addition to her studio work, she is currently an adjunct professor at Glendale Community College teaching beginning and intermediate hand-building ceramics and full time ceramics teacher at Flintridge Prep School in La Canada, CA. She holds a Masters in Ceramics from the National Art Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 2013, she received first place in the juried American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) Ceramic Biennial in Pomona. Her work is now included in the permanent collection at AMOCA. Her work was selected by the Art Museum Council of LACMA and featured at their 2012 Art + Architecture Tour as a special project. She was also the cover featured artist on “500 Figures in Clay,” Lark Books in 2014.
